Tomas Greenberg, Bronx Science/Cornell
Bronx High School of Science, 2017
Residence: Upper West Side, Manhattan
Years in Mo’ Motion: 4
NOTE FROM MO: Tomas Greenberg is one of the hardest-working and most coachable players we’ve had in our program. Tomas aka “T” was the captain and MVP of his JV baseball and basketball teams and is starting for Bronx Science as a senior. T is the type of player who will play any and every position on the floor and not back down from any defensive assignment. We are sure the coaches and teachers at Bronx Science love his grit, toughness and passion for the game as well as for academics.
Here’s a Q&A with T and a few photos at the end.
Who is your favorite basketball player and why? Kristaps Porzingis. His style of play is so unique. There aren’t many players over seven feet who can shoot the ball as well as he does while still not being afraid to bang down low.
Which college and/or pro team is your favorite and why? The Spurs because they’re a dynasty that prides themselves on continued excellence. The way the play is so methodical and makes it so that the offense is always rolling no matter who is in the game.
When did you know that basketball was your favorite sport? (Or is it tied with another sport?) Sixth grade.
Have you spent most of your career playing basketball only or have you played more than one sport? What sports? I’ve always played baseball during the spring for both middle school and high school.
What is your favorite thing to do on the basketball court? Communicate.
What is your least favorite thing to do on the basketball court? Press.
What is your greatest challenge on the basketball court? Creating my own shot.
Who influenced you the most in your basketball career and in what way? Feel free to pick a few people here – who had the most impact individually or collectively. Mo for sure. Mo and the Mo’ Motion coaches really made me believe that talent can only take a player so far without the intangibles of basketball like communication and effort. She is tough and honest, but always has the best interest of the kids in mind. She’s definitely the most basketball-savvy person I have ever met. She truly does believe in the development of players both on and off the court.
Can you describe your first day at Mo’ Motion? All I remember is being both terrified of Mo and amazed at everything all the coaches knew about the game and everything I didn’t know.
What is your favorite Mo’ Motion memory? Getting invited to play on the X team and then playing in my first game.
If you were to describe Mo’ Motion to someone, what would you say the program did for you? It created the foundation of who I am as a basketball player by teaching me the basic fundamentals of the game. It also established my work ethic for both on and off the court.
What are your short- and long-term goals as a basketball player? My short-term goals for this season are to make the playoffs for my school and finish in the top 10 free throw shooters in the PSAL.
What are your short-and long-term goals as an athlete in another sport (assuming you played one?) Throwing more innings this year as a pitcher and improving my ERA.
What are you short- and long-term goals as a student? Short term, I want to continue doing well in school and continue to have the same work ethic despite the well-known stigma of “senioritis.” Long term, I want to discover what I’m truly passionate about studying in college.
What do you envision to be your current or future areas of interest?
I really don’t know yet, but maybe a sports psychologist or sports agent.
What do you think is the most important skill an athlete can have?
Competitive mentality and a hunger to be the best.
What is your favorite quote about sports and/or life?
“Hard work beats talent when talents fails to work hard.” –Kevin Durant
